Through the Eyes of Erin Hamrick
FC Denver has the power to be something different for everyone, but it always provides a community for its players. When talking with Women’s First player and captain Erin Hamrick, this idea and power of the community remained central to her experience. For her, joining the FC Denver Women’s program at its beginning was a way to dive deeper back into the world she loved and grow her community of like-minded people in a newer place.
When Erin moved to Colorado, she started playing indoor for about a year, but it wasn’t enough. It didn’t give her the structure that she craved or the right type of fuel for her competitive nature; it wasn’t enough. So when she heard about tryouts for the Women’s team she was already in. From there, it became about the community and rebuilding her outlet. From the start she felt that, “[FC Denver] cultivates a culture of growth.” It has always been about what’s next and how we are going to get there.
As a player and leader for her team, Erin has been able to watch this growth within the club and her own team. Within the women’s program alone she has watched us grow from one team, to two, to the Women’s First winning the league title in Spring 2021. It’s helped prove that all of the personal, team and club, “goals are obtainable.” For Erin, joining FC Denver has provided her with lifelong friendships and a strong community. Even when she’s done playing these are the people that she’s going to continue seeing, spending time with, and supporting. The relationships made here are worth everything. “Sometimes I feel like it’s better than my college team.” Erin knows that with FC Denver she has a family, she has her competitive outlet, and she has a space to continue growing. “We’ve come farther than I ever thought we could’ve,” said Erin. We aren’t done growing, and neither is she.
