YEAR IN REVIEW: Women

Year in Review

Our Women had a wonderful group and a great year, one that will serve as the foundation for the program for years to come.

“Our season had some ups and downs but overall, we were all just excited to be out there playing,” said Head Coach Liam Hutchison. “Our team showed the most perseverance and hard work that I’ve seen in a while, coming out with the right attitude and making sure every game was hard-fought.”

After the season, our Women’s team saw a few changes that will build upon this year’s successes. Jami Cobb was named as our new Head Coach, who will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to help our Women’s program thrive. We are also excited to announce that, with Karol Bird-Gomez recently being named Club VP, Mallorie McDowell will be stepping up as Women’s Program Manager. Mallorie is also a player for our Women’s team, and here’s what she had to say about the year:

“2020 was a year full of uncertainty that showed the true character and passion of our team. When practices weren't an option each player found the time to work on their individual skills and fitness. Each game was played whistle to whistle and everyone left their hearts out on the field. The caliber of players on this team goes unmatched. We are all very excited to see the continued growth of this team under new leadership in 2021.”

Team Awards

This year we had two awards given out, as voted for by the players. This carries extra significance since those are the people who you practice with every day, play in games with, and see you at your best and worst.

The first award is for the Most Valuable Player, and the nominees were: Hannah Sunberg, Katie Marcheso, Erin Hamrick, Catherine Devitt, and Caelyn Hirschmann. Congrats to each of you for receiving MVP votes.

The Most Valuable Player Award, as voted for by her peers, went to Katie Marcheso. Congratulations Katie!

Every time she came to practice and in games, she kept the best attitude, always playing to win.” said Head Coach Hutchison. “She was an unstoppable force in the back, flying forward and producing goal-scoring opportunities for us, even scoring goals herself. Well done Katie!”

The second award is for the Best Teammate, and the nominees were: Kat Muther, Tori Slattery, Sophie Centi, Caelyn Hirschman, Hannah Sunberg, Erin Hamrick, Megan Zavori, Catherine Devitt, and Mallorie McDowell. Congrats go to all these players for receiving votes by their peers and for being great teammates.

The Best Teammate Award, as voted for by her peers, went to Erin Hamrick. Congratulations Erin!

“One of our top Captains this year, she definitely persevered through all of her adversities, showing discipline and taking care of herself while bringing the right attitude to practices and games,” said Head Coach Hutchison. “One of the most important things that FC Denver provides is a sense of community. Erin brought all of the women together, even during a game if we were losing at halftime, she was there to give us an uplifting speech.”
