YEAR IN REVIEW: Legends
Year in Review
The FC Denver Legends team, similar to our Men’s First Team, had a very successful season this past fall, ultimately just coming short of winning the over-30’s championship. Also like our First Team, our Legends scored of goals, and we mean A LOT of goals… sometimes too many to keep track of. It wasn’t uncommon to see 7, 8, even 9 goals on the board for our Legends.
“Everybody was excited to get out and play as much as we could,” said Legends Player/Coach Alex Brand. “Overall, Legends had a very successful season. We really dominated almost everybody, and at times it was ever hard to keep track of all the goals. Honestly, our only close game was our loss against Harpos. We came second in the league which for us was disappointing, our goal always is to win the championship. We really feel like it’s within our grasp, we have the talent and an unbelievable group of guys.”
“Juan Gonzalez” Award of Passionate Service
Legends had a club-wide award given to one of their players this season: the “Juan Gonzalez” Award of Passionate Service. This award is decided by our leadership members, with each team nominating a player who displayed exemplary commitment to the team, going above and beyond the call of duty.
This year’s “Juan Gonzalez” Award of Passionate Service went to Jose Chavez. Congratulations Jose!
“Jose is our club’s longest standing member,” said FC Denver President Eric Ridgeway Fulton. “FC Denver turned 15 years old this year, and he has been with us pretty much that entire time. He is an engaged member of our Legends team and has really poured his heart into it. FC Denver really runs in his blood, and he is very deserving of this award.”
“We’re super proud of Jose,” said Legends Player/Coach Alex Brand. “He’s been active with the club pretty much ever since day one and is such an integral part of the team, committing both on and off-season. He has fought through many injuries over the years and continues to come out every season, and honestly, this season might have the best I’ve ever seen him play.”
Team Awards
This year we had two awards given out, as voted for by the players. This carries extra significance since those are the guys who you practice with every day, play in games with, and see you at your best and worst.
The first award is for the Most Valuable Player, and the nominees were: Kyle Firebaugh, Tyler Imbrogno, Charlie McDaniel, Felipe Carniero, Jose Chavez, Garret Taylor. Congrats to each of you for receiving MVP votes.
The Most Valuable Player Award, as voted for by his peers, went to Brady Yarletts. Congratulations Brady!
“Brady played unbelievable this season, he’s been one of our better players for many years now,” said Brand. “Still a lot of speed, great footwork, and scored some excellent goals this year. Very deserving of this MVP award.”
"I'm excited and honored to be recognized for this award by my teammates. It's been a fun and successful season for Legends and I couldn't have received this award without their hard work on the pitch as well...so thanks! Having played with most of these guys in this organization for 8+ years, they are not only great players but great friends. This club has provided such a meaningful impact for myself and all that have been and continue to be fortunate enough to be involved with FC Denver. I know we are all looking forward to this upcoming season and getting back out there to play the sport we love. Many (beer) celebrations to come!"
The second award is for the Best Teammate, and the nominees were: Felipe Carniero, Brady Yarletts, Marco Delpiccolo, Charlie McDaniel, Felipe Carniero, Jose Chavez. Congrats go to all these players for receiving votes by their peers and for being great teammates.
The Best Teammate Award, as voted for by his peers, went to Charlie McDaniel. Congratulations Charlie!
“Charlie does an incredible job on and off the field, leading the team, getting the team psyched up, he is a definite leader on the team,” said Brand. “I think Charlie played every position except goalie, making sure the team was doing what we needed to do to win. Also, a big shoutout to his wife for all she did for the team this season. We all know Charlie wasn’t washing and folding those jerseys…”
“It’s an honor to receive the Best Teammate award from my friends and fellow Legends teammates. This Legends team (and the entire FC Denver club for that matter) continues to amaze me with the amount of involvement, fun, and competitiveness we continue to have even in the face of the pandemic — I think we had a full 18-man roster for every game this season, and that’s not an easy stat for us old guys! Although we had a successful Fall 2020 campaign, the O30’s CPL title continued to elude us, but I’m confident that 2021 will see this Legends crew’s finally take home the title.”
There was also a third, unofficial award given to a Legends player for the Most Valuable Libations Supplier, or “Best Beer Bringer” Award. This award went to Garrett Taylor for the second year in a row. Congratulations Garrett on winning such an important award.
Congrats to the entire Legends team. Looking forward to bringing home the over-30 championship in 2021!
